MICHAEL OWEN survived an injury scare as old enemy Bayern Munich gained more revenge on Manchester United.
Alex Ferguson's men lost in a penalty shootout to end their pre-season tour on a sorry note.
Free transfer Owen was downed by a shocking Martin Demichelis tackle on 22 minutes when the striker could have been through.
But after some anxious moments on the United bench, Owen hobbled on and ran off the ankle trouble.
Argie Demichelis was booked for the cynical foul which certainly would have seen a red card in a competitive match.
After a goalless final to the Audi Cup the match went straight to penalties and, after both sides missed one, sudden death.
But Jonny Evans' spot-kick was saved and Daniel van Buyten scored. Bayern have had a bit of an obsession about beating United since the breathtaking Champions League final in 1999.
They got revenge over two legs in the Champions League quarter-finals in 2001 on their way to the trophy.
That United exit prompted an outburst from Roy Keane who claimed United were 'not a great team'.
Whether they are still a great team now - after the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo - remains to be seen.
If success in the Far East offered hope about life after Ron, two nights in Munich have given Ferguson more questions than answers about how that void will be filled.
He has resisted the temptation to play strikers Wayne Rooney and Owen together throughout this pre-season.
They were not too shoddy together for England. The pair played 29 games in the same England team scoring 23 goals between them.
If Dimitar Berbatov does not have a good start to the new campaign then Ferguson might be forced into a rethink.
Bayern had much the better of the first half, slicing United open on a couple of occasions with quick breaks.
In the 18th minute they rattled the woodwork through Mario Gomez.
Owen scored four in four games in the Far East but found things a bit tougher against the German giants - especially when he faced 'chopper' Demichelis after Paul Scholes' brilliant first-time ball.
Berbatov reminded everyone he was actually playing in the 39th minute when he executed an overhead kick from just inside the area.
The ball looped over keeper Michael Rensing but came back off the far post.
Berbatov came to life in a better second half for United and sent over a great low cross on 49 minutes which Owen just could not reach.
Then came the big chance. Berbatov fed Scholes who dinked it through for Owen.
The striker was left with the keeper to beat from 10 yards but Rensing made himself big and blocked the shot.
United burst forward in the final stages and Ryan Giggs provided the through ball which Rooney - on for Owen - fired wild and high into the crowd. Bayern were more accurate from the spot.

Report: Bayern Munich (7)0 - 0(6) Manchester United
